Cotton

The commercial production of Brazilian cotton began in the states of the Northeast Region and the first major producer was Maranhão which, in 1760, exported to Europe the first bags of the product. Until then, producers were dedicated to planting perennial tree cotton, with longer fibers. The planting of herbaceous cotton, with a shorter but more productive fiber, began in São Paulo, which established itself as a major producing center for a period. High land costs and competition from other crops such as sugarcane and soybeans, however, forced the crop to seek new planting areas such as Mato Grosso and Goiás.

Currently, world cotton production is equivalent to 25 million tons. The world's largest cotton exporter is the United States, although China and India are the largest producers but consume most of their production domestically.

Soybean export is one of the largest movements of the country’s economy and soybeans are the most important agricultural crop in Brazil and supply the domestic market with edible oil and oil for biodiesel production, as well as with meal in the production of pigs and poultry.

Projections indicate growth in global demand for soybeans, especially in Asia, which will be a great business opportunity for Brazil.
